Cup of Excellence has been a powerful international search engine linking dedicated craft-driven farmers to high quality roasters around the world since 1999. It operates through a series of yearly competitions with an international jury of highly qualified coffee cuppers. They spend a week in-country selecting the finest coffee lots produced in that country through multiple blind cuppings which are then auctioned to the highest bidders from around the world.
Our favorite from the Peru 2017 auction was the #2 prizewinner El Cerro. Efrain Carhuallocllo Salvador bought his first plot, about an acre and a quarter, in 2005 and has grown it to 5 acres today. He is a member of the Cenfrocafe Cooperative.
El Cerro is grown at the very high altitudes of 6,200 to 6,500 feet (1,900 – 2,000 m.a.s.l.) . Peruvian coffee has been on our radar for many years. El Cerro is a fine example of a great Peru Caturra having a delicate pineapple note with whisps of wintergreen.
